The importance of small industries in Indian economy and their contribution is well acknowledged. What is not much appreciated, however, is that 60% of India’s manufactured exports emanate from around 350 urban and 2000 rural and artisanal clusters. What is even more remarkable is that this contribution is when hardly 0.67% of Small Industries are exporting directly. It is obvious that there is a huge untapped potential for expansion of exports. The barriers encountered by SMEs in entering exports are many but chief of them has been their inability to access quality export marketing skills/ business development services (BDS) that are affordable. On one hand, in metros such BDS providers do exits but their focus is either large enterprises or larger SMEs, on the other hand it non-metros, the required BDS providers are simply absent even if the need exists.
