Export Packaging
One of blunders that beginners commit is they do not plan for Packaging
especially for Exports. Companies having worked for domestic market, just
cannot visualize the kind of handling their export packages go through.
Visiting the ports and having a look at the handling facilities is highly
recommended if one is to understand the importance of packaging particularly
in developing countries where bulk of cargo is handled manually.
There are a few
precautions if taken would save a lot of trouble:
1. Discuss in your trade circle for the best export packaging methods
used for your product. Give a hard look at the quality of packing material
used and plan well ahead of shipment dates. Never try to save on packaging,
buy the sturdiest material with good finish.
2. If your product requires special packaging, it is recommended that
at least for a few times you engage the services of professional packers
latter you may decide whether you could do it on your own or still outsource.
You may also get in touch with
Indian Institute of Packaging for help. You may also discuss the packaging
issues with related Export Promotion Council.
3. Try to visit Trade Fairs on Packaging organized in India see domestic
Trade Fairs .
4. Be consciously on look out for better packaging options and make it
as one of your Unique Selling Points (USPs).
5. Read the packing instructions in the order and Letter of Credit. Always,
inform your buyer about the new kind of packaging you intend to use. There
could be problems in developed countries regarding disposal of packing
material.
6. Make a check list of packing instructions and markings. Avoid writing
by hands on the packages; use printed copies and paste it over them.
